FAQ
WHAT IS FST?
FST a.k. Fredrick Stretch Therapy (previously known as Fascial Stretch Therapy) is a gentle, restorative manual stretch which helps the body release pain and restriction. FST works through the down regulation of the nervous system, and then asking the connective tissue for a change or release, from there muscle and joint are addressed.
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR STRETCHING?
Unlike other assisted stretch, FST works to down regulate the nervous system first, then asking the connective tissue to change, with the muscle, joint, and–when the session calls for it–the nerve to change as a result. FST targets the body through multiple planes of motion, practitioner movement, and client movement. All without pain.
WHAT IS FASCIA?
“The fascial system is one of those complex fractals, hovering between order and chaos, but constantly remodeling and regulating itself to meet the challenge of forces within and around us.”
-Tom Myers Anatomy Trains
Fascia is the connective tissue which threads itself through the body in nets or webs. It connects everything…muscle, bone, organs, etc. As such, restriction or tightness in the connective tissue (fascia) can directly impact not only your pain levels, but movement, posture, nervous system, circulatory systems and the body’s ability to heal.
HOW DOES MY FASCIA AFFECT ME?
Research has shown Fascia isn’t just an inert object along for the ride throughout our lives. Dysfunction in the fascia can have detrimental effects on the body, whereas helping correct problems can have profound implications. It doesn’t matter if you’re training for a sport, rehabilitation, chronic pain management, physical education of moving your body better, or even just aging a bit more gracefully…working to keep a healthy fascial system all plays a role.
HOW DOES FST HELP ME?
FST Sessions are about overall improvement in range of motion, flexibility, and release of pain/restricted areas. As a bodywork modality, FST is about helping restore the ENTIRE body system, not just band-aide a problematic area. At EM we’re here to help you look at the body as a whole.
HOW LONG ARE SESSIONS?
FST Sessions are available in 55 min or 90 minute session. Shorter sessions, though able to reduce pain in the short term, in our experience, don’t always leave enough time to address the body as a whole, or a chronic issue in depth.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
FST can–usually–help reduce pain, stress, restriction within the first session. However, it is a modality which affects are cumulative, meaning results will improve with every consistent session, long-term results happen as the sessions build on each other.
At EM we’ve noticed consistent sessions, paired with easy and doable homework to help teach the body to main the changes, gets amazing results. On average, clients start to continually keep their mobility and pain reduction gains in 3 to 5 sessions. Severe chronic issues ( 3 years or more ) can sometimes take 5 to 8 sessions for the body to keep the gains.
As always, if you’re concerned, our coaches are here to work with you to get you and your body where it needs to be.
